CURRICULUM

MATH

Students will continue learning and mastering math skills through the Engage New York Math curriculum. We will build our knowledge through math modules focusing on Place Value and Decimal Fractions, Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations, Addition and Subtraction of Fractions, Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions, Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area, and Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Expeditionary Learning provides students with an opportunity to continue to practice vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, and writing through units of studies. Students will focus on 4 modules:

-Module 1: Stories of Human Rights

-Module 2: Inventions That Changed People’s Lives

-Module 3: The Importance of Sports in American Culture Over Time

-Module 4: Natural Disasters in the Western Hemisphere.

 

WRITING WORKSHOP

We will continue to build our writing skills through Writer’s Workshop. Students will write Narratives, Informational pieces, Opinion Essays, and Research papers.

SPELLING

We will be using the Zaner Bloser Spelling Connections Program to teach spelling.  Words and the HW assignment will be given on Mondays.  Spelling Tests are on Fridays.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT/
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ENRICHMENT

Enrichment will be integrated in the Science ELD Switch this year. Students will have the opportunity to receive additional support or enrichment in reading, listening, speaking, and writing through the science curriculum with a specific teacher.

SOCIAL STUDIES/HISTORY

Students will learn about how to be strong leader and an effective learner through The Leader in Me curriculum and lessons on growth mindset.

The focus of 5th grade history will be on American History. Students will study the early discovery and establishment of America, various wars leading up to American independence, and Westward Expansion.

 

SCIENCE

Students will be learning from a different teacher each trimester during Science ELD Switch. Each 5th grade teacher will be addressing the Next Generation Science Standards for a specific type of science: life science (Ms. Zeballos), earth and space science (Ms. Dinh), and physical science (Mr. Wong).  Students will be participating in the Annual Orchard School Science Fair as well.

SCIENCE CAMP

Students will have an opportunity to participate in an outdoor learning experience for 4 days and 3 nights at YMCA’s Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek, CA from Mar. 20-23, 2018.   More information will be provided at the Parents Information Nights on Oct. 26 and Feb. 13. PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students will have 35 minutes of P.E. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:05-11:40am. The goal of P.E. is to successfully complete the Physical Fitness Test in May where students will be measured in running a mile, push-ups, curl ups, and flexibility. Please make sure students wear comfortable pants/shorts and running shoes/sneakers for P.E.  In order to skip P.E. due to health reasons, parents should text or write a note to Ms. Dinh.
